LED UV Gives Blackmore $398,000

Shaftesbury, Dorset, United Kingdom – It took the Blackmore Printing Co. only five months to increase its press production to $398,000 with new business it was able to handle in part because of its decision to add an AMS LED UV ink curing system to its newly acquired press. Blackmore is the first print company in the UK to integrate an LED UV system on its newly purchased four-color KBA Rapida 105 press.

“There is a massive opportunity for new markets such as greeting cards. We have lots of work on weird and wonderful papers – it can print on anything,” said David land, Marketing and Sales Director for Blackmore. With the AMS LED UV system, Blackmore has been able to increase their production capacity by turning jobs quicker. Because the LED UV system is energy efficient, they have also been able to significantly reduce their energy costs, as well as eliminate ozone and mercury in the press room. The KBA Rapida 105 and the AMS LED UV have provided Blackmore Printing with the perfect combination – increased press capacity and satisfied customers.

The LED UV curing system eliminates the need for mercury vapor lamps – and the need to replace them. The expected LED life is as great at 20,000 hours of operation. Because the LED UV operates at a much lower temperature, it can be handled immediately the press stops printing. Plus, it doesn’t require a warm-up – saving time and energy. Blackmore is also keen on the technology because of its environmental benefits – a key driver for the company and its appeal to charity and cosmetics clients.
KBA area sales manager Paul Abraham said it was impressive that Blackmore was now hitting an eight-minute makeready time and was down to 80-150 waste sheets. Bland said wastage had been between 300-500 on the company's previous machine.
Blackmore has been so happy with the performance of the KBA press with the AMS LED UV system that chairman Peter Smith said he is considering buying another for Blackmore's sister company, Lamport Gilbert for high-quality, quick-turnaround work.
LED UV is a proven technology that offers Blackmore and other printers an opportunity for significant growth and profitability and can be incorporated on both new and existing press.
AMS will display their LED UV system at the following upcoming tradeshows: TLMI and Graph Expo in Chicago, IL, and at Labelexpo Europe in Brussels, Belgium.
