CASE STUDY: 4-over-4 commercial production in a single press pass

Customer: Druckerei Joh. Walch GmbH & Co. KG

Druckerei Joh. Walch in Augsburg is one of the oldest printing companies to have remained in family ownership throughout its history. Founded in 1755, the company is today a modern print provider working for agencies, publishers, industrial clients, retail traders and the public sector.

Challenge:
The print service provider needs to respond to the growing price pressure in commercial production. Two Rapida sheetfed offset presses which are already running at full capacity are to be replaced with a single press for 4-over-4 perfecting. At the same time, this must also achieve an increase in production capacity.

Solution:
In autumn 2015, the print provider took delivery of an eight-colour Rapida 106 with a perfecting unit for 4/4 production and with LED-UV dryers. Important automation details on this high-end press include simultaneous plate changing with DriveTronic SPC, inline colour measurement with QualiTronic ColorControl, inline register control with QualiTronic ICR, and QualiTronic InstrumentFlight for colour control based on grey balance in accordance with System Brunner.

Benefit:
Capacity has been increased by a complete shift, in other words by practically one-third. The print results obtained no longer change over time. “What you see is what you get“ is an especially valuable argument where jobs are proofed directly at the press. Uncoated papers are printed in high quality. Furthermore, the company can offer and supply products which were simply not available in this form in the past (e.g. non-absorbent substrates). The whole process is significantly more relaxed and there are no production risks. Customer attention is directed to seven virtues of LED-UV production and the long-established company sees itself ideally equipped to master the challenges of the future.
