Kinmei Announces World's First High-Speed LED UV Web Offset

Tokyo, Japan- Nishiki Akira (Kinmei) Printing Company recently announced its milestone and significant industry achievement as the world's first heat-set web-offset printer to move ahead with LED UV curing technology. On Tuesday, July 21, Kinmei along with their key technology partners held a press conference to discuss details about their recent Air Motion Systems, Inc. (AMS) LED UV installation.

Installed on a Goss International 4/4 M600 38-inch (965mm) web-offset press earlier this year, the LED-UV installation represents a world first. “With LED-UV, we no longer have to be concerned with wavy sheets, damaging paper or causing a fire. These were daily concerns using heat-set IR driers,” said Kinmei’s President, Shiro Tsukada. At just 10 kW of energy per side with AMS XP9 Series LED curing lamps, Kinmei Printing Company anticipates a 70% energy savings with new AMS LED UV system compared to the heat-set dryer.

The ground-breaking project began last November when AJC (Air Motion Systems, Japan Corporation, headquarters in Taito-ku, Tokyo, Japan) installed two AMS LED UV modules onto Kinmei’s Goss 4/4 M600 color perfector web-offset press for initial testing. One unit is above the substrate and the second unit is below the substrate. This has allowed them to cure 30,000 sheets per hour by using energy curable ink supplied by Toyo Ink Company. Print quality now rivals that of the best sheetfed offset output with perfectly flat sheets at a better economic cost in higher run lengths. It will further allow Kinmei to move into a variety of new substrates in the future. 

After conducting extensive additional trials this year, Kinmei plans to move the full system into production at the end of 2015. Along with the LED UV there will be a variety of improvements in finishing technology added to the press, afforded through the smaller footprint of the LED dryer. "LED completely clears the issues we've had with the traditional web offset and delivers new value to the web offset process" added Tsukada.
